Do you know that this coming Saturday (26th September) is Mesothelioma Awareness Day?
Recently I had been approached by Heather Von St. James, a 10 year Mesothelioma cancer survivor who hopes I can work together with her to raise awareness of Mesothelioma. After receiving her email, I started done some internet searching to know more about Mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma (间皮瘤) is a rare form of cancer that develops from cells of the mesothelium, the protective lining that covers many of the internal organs of the body. It is most commonly caused by exposure to asbestos (石棉) - Wikipedia
Talking about asbestos, few months ago, I had watched a Taiwan TV shows about cancer caused by asbestos. Through there, I had some general knowledge about asbestos. Asbestos is a fibrous mineral that resistant to chemicals and heat so many construction products are containing asbestos. Naked-eye cannot see through asbestos, therefore, when asbestos flying around on air and will be breathed into the lung. The day after day to inhale in asbestos, it will cause cancer.
Many products around us are containing asbestos such as plastics, paint, weatherproof jackets, floor tile and many more. To know more examples of products have contained/still contained asbestos, you can refer article of “Asbestos Products”.
To know how asbestos-caused cancer, you can refer video as below:-
Some countries knew the dangerous of asbestos therefore they banned for asbestos. Asbestos is banned in at least 60 countries around the world although some of these bans are partial or allow exceptions; more are complete bans on the importation and manufacture of asbestos.
I was so surprised to know that United States remains one of the few developed countries to not completely ban asbestos which still legally use in commonly used products. According to sources from Mesothelioma that Malaysia partially ban for asbestos. The countries expected to ban asbestos completely by 2020 are Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam and Thailand.
Talking about Mesothelioma, Heather is a courageous mother, wife and survivor of Mesothelioma. In November 2005, Heather been told by doctor that she had malignant pleural Mesothelioma and have about 15 months to live. That time, she was very sad because she may not have opportunity to raise her 3 month old daughter and her husband might become widower.
You might be curious that how Heather contact with asbestos which made she have Mesothelioma. When she was small, she likes to wear her dad’s work jacket, white and crusty from drywall dust. The cancer was in the lining of her left lung. After having surgery and proper treatment, Heather had been live more than 10 years since she been diagnosis for this cancer. To read more inspiring stories from Heather, you can read her blog “Beating the Odds, My Decade of Survivorship”.
Prevention is better than cure, I had asked Heather’s opinion regarding prevention. Her answer as below:-
In terms of prevention, there are lots of things we can do, for me personally, I work to spread awareness. I try to talk to people from all around the world, in an attempt to curb any misinformation and encourage others to speak out and share information. To me, awareness and positive flow of information is the best thing I can do to try to help those that still struggle with mesothelioma. I also encourage people in the U.S to contact their senators to talk about a need for a ban on asbestos.
To me, prevention is knowledge! Sharing my story and the stores of others is powerful! Often I hear that people have never heard of mesothelioma and my goal is for everyone to know and share the dangers of asbestos and what they can do to further the conversation.
At last, I was so happy to be invited to spread awareness of Mesothelioma. I did learn a lot when write for this post.
'Wordless Wednesday: Postcard' is recording all the postcards that I had bought from time to time for exchange purpose.
Mid-Autumn Festival is falling on 27 September 2015 (Sunday). Recently I had bought this series of the postcard from Silver. All these postcards are hand drawing by she. I was very curious about the meaning of piglet mooncake so I had searched online to find more information.
I remembered reading somewhere online (which I couldn’t find it now) that in the older days, in order not to waste food, people used the leftover dough from making mooncakes make into little piggies mooncake without filings inside. As to why they used roasted piglet shape, it could be because pigs represent ‘abundance’ in Chinese culture, and roasted piglets are a norm during festive seasons – My Itchy Fingers
In Instagram of His and Hers KL, I had seen a pack of 16 postcards of different sceneries and building in Taping. Sketches are done by students of UCSI University with the theme of “Visualizing Taiping”. The postcard set is RM 30 which included 16 pieces of postcards.
29th August 2015
I had received the postcards from His and Hers KL. The postcards were wrapped well with bubble paper and red ribbon.
Besides postcards, I had received some free stickers for me to decorate the postcard.
This series of the postcard has two small themes which are Flavors of Taiping and A Day in Kuala Sepetang.
Taiping is a town located in northern Perak, Malaysia. It is the second largest town in Perak after Ipoh, the state of capital- Wikipedia
Kuala Sepetang is a coastal town located in Perak, Malaysia. The town was formerly known as Port Weld after a former Governor, Frederick Weld. It is a thriving fishing village, and the main jumping off point to the river mouth community of Kuala Sangga, which is a Chinese fishing community at the river mouth which specializes in fish breeding in cages- Wikipedia
All the sketches postcards are so beautiful. If I was not mistaken, this series of postcard might be the assignment of Interior Architecture students.
I purchased these series of postcards from Erica Choy who is also one of the students sketches on the postcard. Therefore, I had asked her to write something on the postcard for my own collection. She had chosen her sketching postcard to write some words for me.
Silver, a mom blogger had shared in her blog about her son like to copy a Singh in a comedy series of “Mind Your Language”. After saw her sharing, I had searched this comedy series in YouTube and watch it. This series is funny. Silver mom had told me that “Mind Your Language” was watched by aunt or uncle who aged 40 years old above. For my age I think the comedy and English Educational series will be “Oh My English!”
Mind Your Language is a British comedy television series which premiered on ITV in late-1977. Produced by London Weekend Television and directed by Stuart Allen, the show is set in an adult education college in London and focuses on the English as a Foreign Language class taught by Mr. Jeremy Brown, portrayed by Barry Evans, who had to deal with a motley crew of foreign students – Wikipedia
At first when watched it, I quite blur because did not familiar with the students. The students in this television series come from Italy, China, Japan, India, France and many more.
Sometimes students will use their own language which made me quite confuse plus the subtitles did not has a translation of the other language. I also learned something in this series too such as “Por Favor” (Spanish) means “Please” which always said by Juan, a Spanish Guy.
In Session 1 Episode 4, when heard their convocation, I start blur because they said “Plates of Meat” means “Feet”. After explaining by Mr. Brown (English Teacher), I knew it actually is Cockney Rhyming Slang. For me, Rhyming Slang quite hard to understand.
Cockney Rhyming Slang is a form of English slang which originated in the East End of London. Rhyming slang works by replacing the words to be obscured with the first word of a phrase that rhymes with that word. For instance “face” would be replaced by “boat” because face rhymes with “boat race”.
I shared with you the 4 episodes of “Mind Your Language”. Hope you will enjoy it!

Kluang is a town and district located near the middle of the state of Johor in the southern portion of peninsular Malaysia. Johor has 8 districts and this district is the only district that does not have a sea front, as it is surrounded by all other districts namely Johor Bahru, Pontian, Batu Pahat, Segamat, Mersing and Kota Tinggi except Muar district.
Muar is the second biggest town and district of the state of Johor in southern Malaysia. It is also known by its other name, Bandar Maharani which means Empress Town.
