Melaka Trip 2016: Dutch Square, St.Paul Church, A Famosa

23rd April 2016 (Saturday)

Cross a road from Jonker Street and you will reach historic site which full of historical buildings and museums for you to explore. In weekend you can see lots of tourists around Melaka. It is very difficult to take a nice picture because in the pictures can see full of people unless you wait until tourists go to next stop or go there at the early of the morning.

The Dutch Square also called Red Square because all the surrounding building painted red which next to Melaka river is a good starting point for visiting the old part of the town.

Along within Dutch Square is the Tang Beng Swee Clocktower. Even though it looks distinctly Dutch, it was actually built by wealthy Straits Chinese family in 1886 in honor of Tan Beng Swee, a rich Chinese merchant. It reminds me of my place’s clock tower.

At Dutch Square has an “I Love Melaka” sculpture.

Christ Church is an 18th century Anglican church in the city of Melaka. It is the oldest functioning Protestant church in Malaysia.

Around Dutch Square, you can see lots of trishaws. The decorations of trishaws are very beautiful with cartoons such as Hello Kitty, Frozen and many more.

In Ducth Square has many stalls and you can looks for souvenirs such as magnets, postcard and others.

Opposite of Dutch Square has windmill which built to mark the occupation of Dutch in Melaka.

Along the way to A Famosa, you will reach Taman Melaka which is a garden for recreational.

In Taman Melaka, you can find some old transport replica such as airplane, train and others.

The train has the sound of train moving. Inside the train has selling of some souvenirs.

Look for the board to St. Paul Church, you need to go upstairs in order to reach there.

St. Paul Church is a historic church building in Melaka that was originally built in 1521, making it the oldest church building in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. It is locate at the summit of St. Paul Hill.

When we walked to St. Paul Church, we saw an old man took many things and seems very tired in climbing the stairs to upstairs. My friend suggested that both of us can help him then we offered to help. We took a big bag of things which is quite heavy from the old man. From conversation, we knew that he is an artist who drawing under the tree. He showed his drawing to us and it is so beautiful. While we said “goodbye” with him, he said “God Bless you” to us.

Inside of St. Paul Church just has a wall and some plates.

From St. Paul Hill, you can take some photos view of Melaka.

We continued walked and walked down from stairs and met A Famosa

A Famosa is a Portuguese fortress located in Melaka. It is among the oldest surviving European architectural remains in South East Asia. The Porta de Santiago, a small gate house is the only part of the fortress which still remains today.

Beside A Famosa has Proclamation of Independence Memorial which displays records and photographs on the early history of the Malay Sultanate. It divided into several section, the memorial also house an extensive timeline covering the country’s journey to independence and the development of modern Malaysia.

When write for this post, I just knew that Proclamation of Independence Memorial can be visit. The opening hour is Tuesday until Sunday 9am until 5:30pm. The admission is FREE.

According to Wikipedia, the museum is housed in an elegant Dutch colonial mansion. The two golden onion domes located at the top of the building embellish the stark white stucco.

Continued walked from Proclamation of Independence Memorial, you will reach Dataran Pahlawan which is a shopping mall. When go here, don’t forget go to Nadeje Cake House to try for crepe.

On the way back to Jonker Street, I met with Melaka Duck. If you want to try for something new in Melaka, you can join for Melaka Duck Tour which can touring Melaka city on land and sea with the amphibious vehicle.
