Flint and Steel Borneo: Kuching Postcards

The co-founders of Flint and Steel Borneo are Marilyn and Rachel Ang who maybe identical twin sisters but are in many ways different. A flint is a piece of chert, a form of quartz that will spark when struck with steel and is usually used to start a fire therefore “flint” and “steel” represents the co-founders. I like their quote which is “Be in Love with the things that make you different and believe in yourself boldly. They make you, YOU: your passions, your beliefs, your values and your story. That is your power.

Flint and Steel Borneo is selling mug, planner, postcards, notepad and many more. Look through the website of Flint and Steel, I had attracted with a series of Kuching postcards because it is so beautiful.

For your information that all the purchases in website is using USD instead of Ringgit and the payment can be done by PayPal, debit card and credit card. After I made an order of postcard and want to pay for it. I found out that the system did not allow me to proceed although I had tried for 2 debit cards. Then I had asked a help from Flint and Steel Borneo by email them.

I had been contacted by Rachel regarding my problem in payment and instead of waiting IT to troubleshoot the problem, she had asked me to bank in to her own bank account. I also had been told that a set of Kuching postcard which has 9 pieces and now only left 4 types of it and this series of postcard will not reproduce once it sold out. Then she will give me two sets of the 4 types of postcard to become 9 of them.

At the same time, I also won a giveaway from Flint and Steel Borneo towards World Autism Day Campaign to spread awareness and love for Autism. To participate for the giveaway, I just need to post a picture of anything blue in social media with hastag. Therefore prize and my purchase sent together to me.

Flint and Steel Borneo had collaborated with talented photographer friend Ben Lau to bring the very first of their Postcards from Kuching series. This collection features the must see places every tourist should hot up when in Kuching. I only have four types of postcards instead of nine different pieces of Kuching postcards. The 4 pieces are in black and white. Actually in a set of 9, some of postcards are in colorful. To have a clear view of postcard click here.

These are wristband and car sticker from EAP (Early Autism Project).

This is the desk monthly planner in the color “Deep Fishing” which suitable for writes down my schedule. The good for this desk planner is undated so I can start whenever I want. A pack has 12 designs which for 12 month.

Like usual, I will ask the seller or designer of postcard to write some words for me on postcard. They are so sweet that write on a new postcard which are not from my purchase’s postcard.

Little Kingdom

So far, this was my first time to purchase postcard which drawn by little artists. The little artists are Chang Xin Yue (10 years old) and Chang Xin Le (8 years old). Two of them like to draw and they even had their own art exhibition called “Little Kingdom Art Exhibition”.

Through the radio station, I knew about Little Kingdom and started to follow their fan page. After few days, they had released some items for sell such as stickers, calendar and postcards. To give them some support, I had purchased postcard from them. This fan page is handle by their parents. Now you can find their products at Etsy store.

When I received the postcard sets, it was well packed.

I had purchased one set of the postcard from each of them.  I also received two pieces of “Star Wars” stickers as freebies.

The cat postcard set draw by Xin Yue while Star War postcard set draw by Xin Le.

They are so talent because they already been using watercolor to draw something instead of color pencils. In my memory, I just started to use watercolor when I was at Secondary school. Although they drawing are not so perfect compare the real artist, I still can see their passion towards drawing and their drawing skill definitely will getting better after some practices.

Like usual, I had made a small request for their mum to ask them to write something on postcard. As they are small and did not know what to write so I had changed to draw something on postcard for my own collection.

Ever since earthquake in Nepal, I’ve wanted to do this for a long time. Although it’s been awhile since the tragedy, they still need our help, especially those in rural places where help is far from reach. Through selling these postcards, I hope that my photos will show everyone the beauty of Nepal and inspire others to travel in this amazing country. Tourism blooming in their country will do more help than donations.

After read of this post, I decided to buy some postcards as to support Kenny and Nepal. I also hope that the economic in Nepal will become better than before. All the sales profits of the postcards will be donated to Nepal Relief Fund.

27th February 2016

Kenny promised all the postcards will post out after Chinese New Year. In this Saturday, I had received postcard sets from postman. Beside 3 sets of postcards, I got 4 stickers of Guitou Studio. Kenny’s works can be finding in Guitou Studio.

B’Nottee: Reunion Dinner Postcard Set

Last week, I just received my postcard set from B’Nottee. The story behind the name of B’Nottee is interesting which as below:-

B’Nottee (be-No-tee) is a name created from the words “Note” with the name “ee” at the back (Edmund and E-jie).It means someone who uses notebooks and sounds fun. Edmund and E-Jie are interior designers colleague base in Kuala Lumpur that love crafting and stationery. Thus they decided to create a band that make high quality handmade stationery products, ranging from notebooks, covers, pencil cases and bespoke wedding stationery.

The packaging envelope of this postcard set is beautiful with the meaning of reunion dinner with food.

Beside the 4 pieces of postcards, the package envelope also can be another postcard after cut out the four corners. It is very creative because usually we will throw away the envelope and now the packaging envelope can be postcard.

Before this I had bought 4 in 1 postcard from Jeffersonism. Now, B’Nottee also has 4 in 1 postcard for reunion dinner. It means that 4 pieces of postcard can be merging into a big and happy reunion dinner.

Beside 4 pieces of postcard can be merging, two postcards also can be merging, cool right! Hehe..

As this postcard set is for my own collection so I had asked for the designers to write something on the postcard. E-jie had tried watercolor drawing on the postcard and the outcome is very beautiful.

To have a clear view of the postcards, you can click the link as below:-

For those interested with this postcard set can purchase via B’Nottee’s website or shops as below:-

With the 30th anniversary of the death of Mr. Lim Lian Geok (LLG) and establishment of the fund, LLG Cultural had launched postcard series of Lim Lian Geok.

You might be asking who is Lim Lian Geok?

Based on the website, Mr. Lim was spokesperson for the Malayan Chinese community throughout the Independence struggle and he took part in the “Malacca Talks” with Tunku over the Constitutional issued in 1955. He was first and foremost a teachers’ union leader who lived his mission of a civil rights leader of the Malaysian Chinese community. To know more about Lim Lian Geok, click here.

This series of postcard is so meaningful so I had bought a set for my collection and other sets for sending to friends.

This was my first time to receive a receipt after purchase of postcards, it looks so formal. Hehe..

This postcard series has 3 sets which are illustration postcard and 2 different sets of old pictures postcards.

What I like about the postcard is it has Chinese and English explanation for the pictures so means that I can send the postcard to everyone. I think the postcard come from scanning of old pictures so at the back of postcard can be seen the old mark.

The illustration postcards are drawn by Hung Wan Lu. It was about the epic struggle of Chinese education in Malaysia into 8 different historical periods. Same as old picture postcards that at the back of postcard has Chinese and English explanation. I like the back of the postcard because it has many types of colors and the quality of the postcard is good.

His & Hers KL: Visualizing Taiping Postcard

In Instagram of His and Hers KL, I had seen a pack of 16 postcards of different sceneries and building in Taping. Sketches are done by students of UCSI University with the theme of “Visualizing Taiping”. The postcard set is RM 30 which included 16 pieces of postcards.

29th August 2015

I had received the postcards from His and Hers KL. The postcards were wrapped well with bubble paper and red ribbon.

Besides postcards, I had received some free stickers for me to decorate the postcard.

This series of the postcard has two small themes which are Flavors of Taiping and A Day in Kuala Sepetang.

Taiping is a town located in northern Perak, Malaysia. It is the second largest town in Perak after Ipoh, the state of capital- Wikipedia

Kuala Sepetang is a coastal town located in Perak, Malaysia. The town was formerly known as Port Weld after a former Governor, Frederick Weld. It is a thriving fishing village, and the main jumping off point to the river mouth community of Kuala Sangga, which is a Chinese fishing community at the river mouth which specializes in fish breeding in cages- Wikipedia

All the sketches postcards are so beautiful. If I was not mistaken, this series of postcard might be the assignment of Interior Architecture students.

I purchased these series of postcards from Erica Choy who is also one of the students sketches on the postcard. Therefore, I had asked her to write something on the postcard for my own collection. She had chosen her sketching postcard to write some words for me.
