One Day Trip in Singkawang

22 September 2017 (Friday)

Singkawang or San Khew Jong in Hakka, is a city located in the province of West Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo in Indonesia. It is located at about 145 km north of Pontianak, the provincial capital, and is surrounded by the Pasi, Poteng, and Sakok mountains. Singkawang is derived from Hakka Chinese, San Khew Jong which refers to "a town in hills nearby a sea and estuary."- Wikipedia

A GO-JEK driver (Mr. Rudy Sudiono) offer us one day trip in Singkawang (Toyota Kijang Innova) which cost 1000,000 Rupiah. From Pontianak to Singkawang, it take 3 hours for a way. According to the driver, Singkawang has thousand of Chinese temples. Therefore, when it has any festivals like Chap Goh Mei, it is very grand. Driver did bring us to some temple to have a visit.

Chai Kueh (Steamed Vegetable Dumplings) : 15 pieces cost 22,500 Rupiah

This Chai Kueh is not selling in shop but in house. I think is family business.

Many people come here to eat Chai Kue.

Bubur Gunting Asun: one small bowl cost 20,000 Rupiah

This is a small stall at roadside which managed by an uncle with his sons if I not mistake.

This small bowl consist of green bean without skin and Youtiao (Chinese fried dough/Chinese crullers). It is perfect match with a little bit sweet.

Rujuk Thai Phui Ji

We eat Rojak (traditional fruit and vegetable salad dish) and some kuih (bite-sized snack or dessert foods) which cost us 35,000 Rupiah.

The rojak is using fish sauce that I think not bad in taste. Inside rojak has sliced mango with keropok or snack.

The kuih is not taste at all so when eat must mix with the sauce.

Chinese Temple

We did visit Chinese Temple that located at the mountain, quite high.

Beside temple has an eagle inside cage.

Dunia Baru

I did not know what to buy in Pontianak and Singkawang as souvenirs therefore lastly I bought fish crackers.

Singkawang Grand Mall & Hotels

Although Singkawang looks small or some like Labuan, I feel that their mall is better than mall in Labuan. Maybe it is new?

  1. I have not visited Labuan yet and always curious to know whether it is worth flying all the way to Labuan from KL.
I love to eat Chai Kueh because I am Teowchew Nang.

    1. Twilight Man,

Labuan is just a small island. I think staying for 2 days and 1 night should be enough. From Labuan can take ferry to Sabah (Kota Kinabalu) too.

One Chai Kueh not so cheap in Labuan so cannot eat too many :(
